Flora and Fauna

Flora and Fauna Footprint is a biodiversity mapping initiative launched with the objective of creating a comprehensive digital map of the flora within GEMS Modern Academy. This project serves as a foundational platform for future environmental initiatives within the school, offering a centralized online platform that provides detailed information on plant species, population counts, and other relevant botanical data. Moreover, the project fosters practical engagement by encouraging students to interact directly with their natural surroundings. This hands-on involvement cultivates a sense of environmental stewardship and personal responsibility, empowering students to contribute meaningfully to ecological sustainability.

Journey

The Flora and Fauna Footprint project was initiated in 2024 by Ishanvi Shetty, Laiba Adnaan and Swana Athithi, with the aim of integrating it into the academic curriculum of both middle and senior school students. To facilitate this, the school grounds were divided into multiple sections, each of which was further broken down into specific zones. Individual classes were assigned a designated zone and tasked with identifying and documenting plant species, including their scientific names and notable characteristics. The data collected was then compiled and used to design a digital biodiversity map of the school campus. This map, finalized in 2025, now serves as a living document of the school’s ecological landscape and a valuable resource for future environmental studies and initiatives.
