Welcome to GEMS Modern Academy - Dubai

Founded on the 18th of October, 1986, GEMS Modern Academy projects an educational outlook few schools can rival.

Affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi, the school opens admissions to pupils from the Kindergarten level.

Students at Modern learn about the world and the people in it from an early age, developing an awareness of different cultures and countries. By exploring the world, they become academically, intellectually as well as socially, culturally, economically and environmentally aware. They develop a sense of positive personal identity and adopt a universal perspective to better understand how they can make a difference in the global community.

Modern and Excellence

GEMS Modern Academy has the distinction of winning the highest educational accolade in the Gulf region- The Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Distinguished Academic and Administrative Performance.

GEMS Modern Academy is the Winner of the prestigious Dubai Quality Appreciation Program , constituted by the Department of Economic Development, Government of Dubai, under the patronage of H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The school is the only educational institution in UAE to be honoured with this award.

Life Skills

This is an interactive programme that has been introduced this year. It focuses on fostering the development of skills crucial to promote mental well being and competence in people.

The three core skills sets – have been adopted from the Life Skills programme followed by the WHO and UNICEF. Specific skills within these core sets are taught using everyday examples. So that students can relate to both problems and solutions in their lives.

Students have one Life Skills class per week which is conducted by the members of the Counselling Department. The teaching methodology includes experiential exercises,small-group and large-group discussions reflective exercises and the use of multimedia. This enriches the quality of educational content by addressing issues relevant to the lives of learners, not traditionally included in the academic curriculum and which demands the adoption of positive behaviour.

Afternoon Curriculum Enhancement (ACE) programme

The ACE is an integral part of the school’s curriculum and is a powerful force in advocating and promoting all co-curricular activities.

The Programme is closely monitored by the Principal, the Senior Management Team and the ASIP coordinators, in order to continually optimize students’ achievement.

It comprises two sessions, one of Prep and the other of Clubs/Games.

The Prep session enables the students to complete their homework and academic research under the supervision and support of the Prep Teachers.

During the Clubs sessions, the children are taught a hobby or develop a skill that will in the future help them utilize time profitably. Clubs include Robotics, Art and Craft, Quizzing, Debating, Elocution, Choral Recitation, Drama, The Book Club, Computers, Scouts and Guides, Electronics, Science Club, Clay Modeling, Photography, The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Dance and Aerobics

Modern and Leadership

Modern believes in cultivating the quality of leadership in students at a very early age. Students are given every opportunity to display their maturity, commitment, attitude and ability to execute responsibility. It is through this process of growth and development that students are able to take on even greater responsibilities as they grow older.

Students of the Primary and Middle School are appointed leaders of their sections to use their talents to enable the school to grow and move forward.

Elected students of Grade 12 are invested as Prefects of the school for each academic year. At a swearing-in ceremony, they mark the beginning of a journey of growth as they take on the responsibility of leading the school in every endeavor.

Modern High is the first school in the region to conceptualize and host the first ever symposium on “Women and Leadership in the 21st century – An International Perspective”

The school recognizes the direct link between public speaking, lateral thinking and leadership. We believe in the preparation of future global policy makers and the need to teach the skills of analytical discussion and persuasive argument, the two key skills for any international decision maker.

Modern continues to attend the Global Youth Leaders Conference, held annually in Washington DC and the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The aim of this programme is to relate to the emotional as well as diplomatic factors governing international decisions.

Modern attends the Global Young Leaders Debating and Leadership Programme in the United Kingdom, organized by the Our World Schools and the International English Speaking Union, of which Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is patron. Pupils of Modern Debate in the chambers of Cambridge Union’s Debating Society.

Dubai Modern High School is the only school in the United Arab Emirates to have founded its own Debating Society. A student driven initiative it is headed by a Student President as well as other Student Office Bearers. The school continues to participate and win debate competitions at the national and international levels.

The Student Council working group was set up by student leaders of Modern from Grades 5-12 to promote a democratic environment in school. It acts as a representative structure at Modern through which pupils are involved, not only in the affairs of the school, but also work in partnership with the school management and staff for the benefit of the school and the student community.

Modern and the Spirit of Entrepreneurship

Modern believes in inculcating a sense of entrepreneurship, enabling students to fully understand the importance of striving for economic progress, and to be well equipped to contribute to it.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Modern continues to win awards for the Most Entrepreneurial School and the Most Profitable Business Award.

Modern and the Environment

Modern is firmly committed to a cleaner and safer environment. Raising awareness of environmental issues and thereby contributing to the planet’s well being is one of the significant goals of Dubai Modern High School. The school strongly believes that the key to saving today’s environment lies with today’s youth.

Modern is a member of the Seeds of Change Soka Gakkai International, Japan under the support of the Earth Charter.

In the international Green Olympiad Environment Examination for school children held annually, students of Modern continue to be recognized for their outstanding contribution to environmental issues, and have attained top-10 rankings at the international level.

Modern and the Spirit of Service

Modern believes in reaching out and impacting lives. Over they years, the school community has contributed more than two and half million Dirhams to worthy causes across the globe. Recipients have included UNICEF, Medicine Sans Frontier, The Red Crescent Society, the Dubai Centre for Special Needs and the Al Noor Centre for Children with Special Needs.

Modern has worked actively for tsunami and famine relief around the world, contributing clothes, books, tents, blankets and non-perishable goods for those most in need.

The school encourages and allows voluntary social service within the student community. Students work with the Dubai Centre for Special Needs, spending time with physically and mentally challenged children

Modern continues to work with the Dubai Cares Foundation – an organization providing aid for needy people worldwide, assisting and enabling civil societies, especially women and children, to flourish, and combat global poverty as well as protect human dignity.

Modern High has supported the United Nations “Building a Culture of Peace” initiative, in the international decade of peace and non-violence for children of the world, under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Haya bint Al Hussein.

Modern and the Spirit of Adventure

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme:

This is an international voluntary, non-competitive, flexible programme for cultural and adventurous activities, for students to pursue in their spare time. This award is universally recognized as the best programme for the personal development of young people.

Cubs and Bulbuls:

The school boasts of a unit of The Bharat Scouts and Guides, which in turn sponsors the Cubs and Bulbuls, aimed at developing the talents of younger children Activities and camps are organized to share fun, paying special attention to nature preservation and conservation.

Scouts and Guides:

Following the motto of “Do All Things Well”, this raises the intellectual as well as physical qualities of a child, teaching them to do the right thing and inculcate good habits. It affords the opportunity for initiative, self-reliance, self-control and self-direction.

Pastoral Care

With a view to foster a competitive spirit among its students, all students are divided into various 'houses'. A number of inter-house events that fill the calendar year cover the gamut of all sporting and literary activities. These activities become the ground work for competition at a higher level. The House System at Dubai Modern High School helps to inculcate a spirit of cooperation, healthy competition and develop loyalty both to the House and to the School. Each House is headed by a Captain, who works under the guidance of House Teachers.

The students are divided into four houses named after constellations. They are-

Aquila House, which is represented by the Eagle. The House Colour is Yellow. The motto of the House is “Do All Things Well.” Soaring on the wings of persistence and self-confidence, the students learn to build foundations that strengthen the bonds of friendship and improve individual effort and team spirit.

Cygnus House, which is represented by the Swan. The House Colour is Red. The motto is “To Labour is to Pray.” Just as a swan faces difficulties of life with serenity and dignity, the students learn to face everyday challenges with grace and poise.

Orion House, which is represented by the Hunter. The House Colour is Green. Students learn that in idea to make an ideal a reality, the qualities of a Hunter should be an integral part of their lives. Their obstacles can be overcome and dreams realized if they follow the House motto, “Labour through Faith.”

Pegasus House, which is represented by the Winged Horse. The House Colour is Blue. The motto of the House is “Reach for the Stars.” With this as the guiding force, the students are committed to constantly strive for excellence. For them, the sky is the limit.

Traditional Values

Modern believes in upholding traditional values, and the school is proud to celebrate our rich cultural heritage.

The school observes Independence Day, Republic Day, as well as occasions such as Gandhi Jayanti, Diwali, Eid and Christmas, promoting patriotism and universal brotherhood.

The School continues to send its pupils for Umrah.

In an effort to strengthen family bonds, Modern initiated Grandparents Day. On this special occasion, grandparents from across the world converge at Modern to be a part of their grandchildren’s school life.

The School has a strong ethos of discipline and mutual respect.
